A few years ago, young musicians with Angolan roots and living in Portugal hit upon a new fresh sound.
The band, Buraka Som Sistema, took the Angolan dance style known as kuduro and injected it with techno beats.
Kuduro literally means “hard ass” and the dance itself is upbeat and energetic, making derrieres shake from Luanda to Lisbon.
But now a new version of kuduro has emerged, and this time the samples come from the old-school soulful and sometimes psychedelic sounds of 1970s Angolan pop music.
