Argentine president, Christina Fernandez-Kirchner is embroiled in a confrontation with farmers over a proposed tax on food exports, as Richard Reynolds has the story.
The rally crippled the city and banks and offices closed early. Kirchner’s speech didn’t fail to disappoint. She railed against the greed of the farmers. Kirchner says she governs for all farmers and not just the farmers. the nation has been split over taxes that Kirchner has imposed on the farmers, to which they’ve rioted and caused shortages of food and fuel in the country. this political scientist says the anti-government protests have little to do with the taxes. The president also announced she would put her taxes to a vote in Congress but the farmers remained unimpressed. It seems the farmers might have the support to outlast the government and the president. The political scientist agrees the president has an uphill battle. He describes Kirchner’s style as authoritarian.
