Microbe’s Big Role

Microbes make up half of the planet’s biomass but are one of the most poorly understood life forms on Earth. The National Academy of Sciences has called for funding an effort to study the genomes of microbe communities.

A committee from the National Academy of Sciences has issued a report calling on the federal government to fund a ten-year effort to study the genomes of microbe communities. “Metagenomics” is a new field which analyzes the role micro-organisms play in regulating the health of the planet.
