Global Hit – Waga Hip-Hop festival

The 8th annual Waag Hip-Hop festival is under way in West Africa and the focus this year is on African female rappers. Host Marco Werman speaks with reporter Sasha Gankin about the festival and some of the women artists on the bill.

With few exceptions, rap music has often been the domain of men. The music is macho.

Some even say anti-woman. Now imagine, hip-hop in West Africa where the position of women in society is often weaker than the west.

We’ll here’s an example that will probably contradict what’s in your imagination. That’s female rapper from Ivory Coast named PrissK.

She’s one of seven female rap artists at the 8th Waga Hip Hop.

Waga refers to Ouagadougou, the capital of the West African landlocked nation of Burkina Faso.

Ouagadougou is where the festival is being held. Reporter Sasha Gankin is in Ouagadougou.
