Millions of Muslims live in Russia, more than any European country. In many parts of Russia, people have practiced Islam for centuries. These are regions that used to be independent, where many different ethnic groups have lived alongside Slavic Russians. Many Russian citizens in these regions are proud of their ethnic and religious identity — even if they’re no longer practicing.
