With their outrageously long horns and sleek auburn coats, Ankole cattle are a symbol of western Uganda. But they’re now considered an endangered breed, as farmers switch to imports such as Holsteins. And this is a problem because Ankole cattle are equipped to withstand harsh conditions such as high temperatures and droughts — both of which are occurring more often.
