Jan. 1 is, of course, the start of the new year. But it’s also the day Haitians celebrate their independence from France. It’s a proud legacy they’re honoring: Haiti was the first nation to gain independence through a successful slave revolt. To mark the occasion, Haitians on the island and across the globe celebrate with a special soup. Belinda Baptist is originally from Jacmel, Haiti.
