Purnendu Goswami grew up in a deeply religious family and came to embrace radical Hindu nationalism. At one point in his life, he says his heart was filled with nothing but fanaticism and violence, especially toward Muslims. In the early 1990s, he joined a mob that marched to the town of Ayodhya, intending to tear down a mosque there. But as Goswami became more famous in India, and began traveling abroad, his world view was transformed. He questioned his dogmatic religious beliefs and eventually developed an entirely new outlook.
