The subversive origins of a dance craze that swept the nation in the 1890s.
Some parodies are so clever the subjects don’t even realize they’re being mocked. Thecakewalkdance was created by slaves to poke fun at their white masters. And the clueless masters loved it. Jonathan Mitchell speaks with choreographer Dianne McIntyre about how the parody came full circle.
