With African Fashion Week Nigeria set to take over Lagos later this month, we're paying tribute to the fashion-forward (and politically inspired) hairstyles captured by Nigerian photographer J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere.

In more than 1,000 photos, Ojeikere captured a wave of powerful and proud hairstyles that swept across Nigeria in the years following its independence from Britain in 1960.

Few could trace a part of a half-century of Nigerian life better than Ojeikere, who died last year at age 83.

One of his most well-known photos documented the "Onile Gogoro" or tall house, an impressive, crown-like hairstyle worn by women across Lagos post-independence.
