Now in its third year, the Syrian civil war has claimed more than 100,000 lives, injured thousands more, and left millions homeless. This week, as the Obama Administration lobbies Congress to support an American intervention in the Syrian conflict, the Syrian opposition waits with baited breath.
The opposition is fragmented, comprised of many disparate groups, including Jabhat al-Nusra–an al-Qaeda-affiliated organization–and the Syrian National Coalition, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood and a number of Syrian exiles.
Carne Ross is a former British diplomat and the founder of Independent Diplomat, a non-profit diplomatic advisory group that is currently advising the Syrian National Coalition. He discusses the state of the opposition, and the Coalition’s hopes for the future.
