Last fall Hurricane Mitch slammed into Honduras and devastated the nation’s harvest, tearing away at small steep plots of corn and beans and burying valuable fruit and vegetable export farms. The storm exposed the long-term vulnerabilities of Honduran agriculture. And some say the priority given to export crops in the cleanup effort may be making the country’s problems worse.
