The World’s Gerry Hadden reports that piracy on the high seas is on the rise, and European leaders are calling for a permanent international force to patrol trouble spots.
Heavily armed Somali fisherman stormed this ship on Sunday and the situation on board remains tense. One hijacker makes it clear what they want: money. This is the 49th attack on ocean vessels so far this year, that’s a 20% increase over last year. Spain is calling on NATO and other countries to come to its aid in rescuing the attacked ship, but help could come from France which has international vessels already patrolling the coast. Fresh off some success, France is demanding that the international community unite against pirates.
