Helsinki’s trams are clean, quiet and efficient and the transportation authorities are hoping to make them even more efficient. They’re testing out some technologies that integrate geographic location, mobile phones and internet access on its trams and busses. One company has developed software which allows riders to use their mobile phone’s camera to find out when the next tram or bus will arrive. The service is fee for passengers. Helsinki has to pay for the service, but it’s cheaper than installing electronic screens at stops with this info. Some of Helsinki’s busses and trams are exploring with free wi-fi and the government is also experimenting with advertising with this service. You can also use your phone to buy a ticket, a service which has been in use in Finland for the last seven years.
