It’s expensive to run an airline these days. Italy’s national carrier — Alitalia — is desperately looking for cash to stay in business. Some flights may have to be cancelled because there’s no money to buy fuel.
JS says the Lehman Brothers collapse in the U.S. has big ramifications for airlines globally, because people who would’ve lent money to airlines in prior years to bail them out will not be willing now. (Isn’t it the case that it’s an indication that there are too many low-cost carriers?) There are a lot of low cost carriers, both small and large players.
