Cartoonist Darrin Bell talks to Faith about an event he’s organizing to bring attention to the scarcity of black cartoonists in newspapers and the de facto quota system editors employ on comics pages.
Of all the 200 or so comic strips syndicated in US newspapers, only 15 are drawn by African-Americans and feature prominent black characters. And if a paper picks up one of these so-called “black” strips, chances are another one is getting the boot. Darrin Bell is the cartoonist behind Candorville and
