Coming up on today’s show:

• Though it’s been more than three weeks since Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico, much of the island is still without water, electricity, and basic necessities. Caitlin Dickerson, a reporter for our partners at The New York Times, is on the ground and reporting on the solutions Puerto Ricans are coming up with in order to survive.

• While some Puerto Ricans struggle to put their lives back together on the island, others have left for the mainland. Joan Figueroa fled Puerto Rico on September 25th with her husband Nadir. They are currently with family in Elmira, New York, and discuss how they are working to move forward. 

• On Tuesday, the American military announced that U.S.-backed forces retook the Syrian city of Raqqa from the Islamic State. We look at the costs of this fight, the realities of the victory, and what it means for civilians on the ground with Rukmini Callimachi, a correspondent for our partner The New York Times covering ISIS.

• The National Football League (NFL) will not ask players to stop kneeling during the national anthem. The news broke on Tuesday, as a group of NFL owners met with players and Commissioner Roger Goodell during the first session of a two-day meeting. Dave Zirin, sports editor for The Nation magazine and host of “The Edge of Sports” podcast, has the details. 

• In the year 2067, author Stanley Bing thinks humans will be so totally interconnected by implanted technology that we will lose the ability to think for ourselves. He imagines what life will be like 50 years into the future in The Takeaway’s new series, “Earth: 2067.”

• It’s been more than two weeks since a gunman killed 58 people and injured more than 400 others at a concert in Las Vegas. Many details remain unclear about that night, with frequent revisions to the timeline of events. Jennifer Medina, national correspondent for the New York Times based in Los Angeles, explains what we do and do not know about the deadly massacre. 

• When it comes to changing the culture around sexual violence and harassment, what role should men play? According to Jackson Katz, co-founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention training program, the onus is not on women to come forward in order to create change. Rather, change should begin with men.
