  • The city of Las Vegas, Nevada is beginning to recover after the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history — on Sunday, a gunman killed at least 59 people and injured over 500 at a country music concert. Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell, and Nevada State Senator Tick Segerblom, a Democrat representing the Las Vegas area, explain how the community is coping amid the violence. 
  • The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Gill v. Whitford on Tuesday, a key gerrymandering case that could have a huge impact on how political parties draw congressional districts. Emily Bazelon, a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine, has the details. 

  • Several prominent Republicans signed onto an Amicus Brief in Gill v. Whitford — they’re urging the court to end “extreme partisan gerrymandering.” Senator Richard Lugar, who represented Indiana in the U.S. Senate from 1977 until 2013, is one member of the GOP calling on the Supreme Court to reform the system that can distort the democratic process.

  • On Friday, the U.S. announced that it will pull most of its staff from the U.S. embassy in Cuba in response to “sonic attacks” conducted against diplomats. On Monday, the Associated Press reported that the American spy network in Cuba was among the first group of individuals targeted. Josh Lederman, an Associated Press foreign policy reporter, has the details. 
  • Legendary rock musician Tom Petty died on Monday after suffering a full cardiac arrest in his home on Sunday night. The Takeaway examines his musical legacy with John Schaefer, host of WNYC’s Soundcheck and New Sounds.
  • For concertgoers who were in Las Vegas Sunday night, the trauma of the attack is still fresh. Jenn Salazar was in the crowd with her 14-year-old daughter. They had driven to Las Vegas with her parents from their hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. And Ruth Thompson was at concert with her boyfriend, visiting from Erie, Pennsylvania. They share their stories today on The Takeaway.
